During her playing career, she performed in the sports clubs Chertanovo, Ryazan-VDV, and Nadezhda (Noginsk). As a member of the Russian national team, she took part in the 1997 European Championship. Before joining Dynamo, she worked as a coach at the Nadezhda and Sokol sports schools.
She played as an all-rounder for the sports club "Chernomorochka" (Odessa), "Spartak-Preobrazhenie", "Chertanovo" (both Moscow), "Turbina" (Potsdam, Germany), "Ryazan-VDV" (Ryazan), "Nadezhda" (Noginsk ).
She was regularly called up and played for the national teams of the USSR and the CIS (1990-1992), and scored a goal against the England national team (3:1) in a friendly match on September 10, 1991.
From 1992 to 2002, she played more than 35 matches for the Russian women's national team, in which she also scored one goal - on March 9, 1993, in a friendly match against Moldova (1:0). Participant in the final tournament of the 1997 European Championship (2 matches).
Achievements as a player: winner of the Russian Cup (1998), two-time finalist of the Russian Cup (1992, 1997), 5-time bronze medalist of the Russian Championship (1993, 1997-1998, 2005-2006). Master of Sports of Russia in football, candidate Master of Sports in athletics

- the team of SSHOR No. 27 "Falcon" of Moskomsport - to victories and prizes in Moscow championships in different age categories - from children's and youth to the adult team, and in 2016 her team became the winner of the 2nd League - the Russian Championship among women's teams;
– under her leadership, the Moscow junior teams became silver (2017) and bronze (2022) medalists of the Russian Football Championship among national teams of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation for girls under 17 years old;
– best coach of the Moscow region (2009)
Among her students are players of Super League clubs and Russian national teams of different ages: Varvara Bychkova, Alina Myagkova, Yulia Prisyazhnyuk, Alena Ruzina, Lyubov Yashchenko.
In December 2021, Valentina Barkova led the junior team of the Dynamo U-15, which, under her leadership, won silver medals at the Moscow Winter Championship in the 2022 season and reached the semi-finals of the Moscow Cup.
On January 9, 2023, Valentina Vladimirovna was appointed head coach of the Dynamo U-21 youth team.
