Team Status

The previous match was the fourth home game in a row for our team in the Super League – before that, the white-blues hosted Rubin (2:0), Zenit (0:2) and Krasnodar (1:0) in Novogorsk. This time, another team from the south of Russia, WFC Rostov, arrived in the Moscow region domain of Dynamo. The team, which is not yet grabbing stars from the sky, has just changed its head coach – the place of Igor Gavrilin, who left the club, was taken by Yana Chub, who had previously worked only with the youth team of the yellow-blues. As if justifying expectations, the Rostov girls from the first minutes appeared to be a renewed team – they looked so interesting from the start of the game. However, the first five minutes were spent in an equal game, or rather, in an equal fight. Only by the end of a quarter of an hour did the Dynamo players begin to slowly take the ball and increasingly get closer to the opponents' goal. Unfortunately for the white-blues, by the 25th minute Dynamo suffered their first losses: Elena Shesterneva was injured and was unable to leave the field on her own, only with the help of Dynamo doctors. The forward's participation in the upcoming game with Lokomotiv is also in question. In the game with Rostov, she was replaced by Ekaterina Sergeeva. Paradoxically, immediately after this forced substitution, the nature of the game changed dramatically, and in favor of Dynamo. Kaylan Williams, who celebrated her birthday on Saturday, but hit the crossbar of Yulia Chernyshova's goal, and Tijana Matic, who showed miracles of dribbling in the Rostov penalty area, also had real chances to open the scoring. But no goals were scored, and the teams went into the break with zeros on the scoreboard. In the second half, the coaching staff of the white-blues, headed by Sergey Lavrentyev, threw all possible forces into the attack: Galina Geybieva replaced Lamunat Mustafayeva and the team switched to a game with three pure forwards. But the scoreboard in Novogorsk still showed zeros.

Starting from the 70th minute, the white-blues literally locked Yana Chub's charges in their half of the field and forced the Rostov girls to play simply on the defensive at times. Williams and Matic had chances again, long-range strikes from Yulia Bessolova - the maximum forces were thrown to score at least one goal against Rostov. But the ball stubbornly refused to fly into the visitors' goal, as if it were bewitched.

But the visitors, who spent most of the second half fighting off Dynamo attacks, only had one chance to do so. Moreover, the Rostov girls scored so easily that it was even more offensive: firstly, from a set piece, and secondly, Nadezhda Koltakova headed in a corner kick without any resistance from the Dynamo defenders. And Rostov scored in the last minute of regular time, and the white-blues had only six minutes left to at least equalize. Unfortunately, luck was not on the side of the Dynamo players that day, and everything was decided by a single goal, by the way, the first for the Rostov girls against Dynamo. The white-blues not only conceded for the first time, but also lost to Rostov for the first time. Dynamo's defeat and Lokomotiv's victory in the round again changed the teams' standings. Now the railway workers have regained third place in the table, and the white-blues have rolled back to 4th place, where Spartak is now breathing down their necks. The difference between the teams has been reduced to a minimum.

About the opponent

The next opponent of the white-blues is the WFC Lokomotiv, a club from the "big three" of Russian women's football, along with CSKA and Zenit. In its current form, the team appeared in February 2018, before that there was a short Soviet-Russian period of existence at the turn of the 80s and 90s of the twentieth century.

In the first season, the railway workers took only 6th place among 8 participants, but starting from the 2019 season and then for five years, the team has not been left without titles and medals. The most successful year for the red-greens so far remains 2021, when the wards of Elena Fomina, who still leads the team, made a "golden hat-trick": they became champions of the Super League and winners of the Cup and Super Cup of Russia.

In just 6 years of its existence, the Lokomotiv Women's Football Club has collected an impressive collection of awards: gold (2021), silver (2019, 2020) and bronze (2022, 2023) medals of the Super League, two-time winners of the Cup (2020, 2021) and Super Cup (2021, 2022) of Russia, participation in the UEFA Champions League (2021/22).

Last season, the railway workers again won bronze medals of the Super League, the second in a row, and, as in the last off-season, a whole group of players - the team's leaders - left Lokomotiv: Anna Kozhnikova, Natalia Morozova, Alina Myagkova, Victoria Nosenko, Tatyana Morina, Maria Galay, Elina Samoilova, Irina Podshibyakina. The club's main star, the Railwaywomen's top scorer Nelli Korovkina, also finished her career at Lokomotiv. After a break due to the birth of her child, she resumed her career, but this time at Zenit St. Petersburg.

However, the Railwaywomen did not remain without star returns. After several years of playing in Europe (Chelsea, Paris), another star of Russian women's football, midfielder Alsu Abdullina, returned to Cherkizovo. The return of the 23-year-old footballer turned out to be triumphant: Abdullin scored in her very first match for the Railwaywomen (against Krasnodar in the previous round of the Super League, 2:0).

And in general, despite the losses in the squad, Elena Fomina's team looks good this season: Lokomotiv has only two defeats (from CSKA 0:2 and Dynamo 0:3 in the first round) with 24 goals scored and 8 goals conceded in 14 games. By the way, just after the defeat from the white-blues in Novogorsk, Lokomotiv gave its 8-match unbeaten streak (7 wins, 1 draw, 18-2).

Yes, the gap from the leaders of the tournament table CSKA and Zenit is already 8 points, but the red-greens are confidently in the top three of the championship and are ready to fight for the national cup. What is at least the first match in the 1/8 finals of the Winline Cup of Russia, where the Muscovites simply outclassed the Chelyabinsk OSSh with a non-football score of 16:0!

By the way, the upcoming meeting within the cup will be the first this month, the second game between these teams will take place in two weeks - but within the 17th round of the Super League.
