Team status

Sergey Lavrentyev's team played their previous match in St. Petersburg against one of the championship leaders, WFC Zenit. Olga Poryadina's team is the current Super League champion and one of the two main contenders for the championship title this season. The second is WFC CSKA, which defeated Zvezda-2005 at home the day before and took sole charge of the tournament table. So Zenit clearly did not plan to lose points and let its competitors in the championship race pass them by. Moreover, like Dynamo a week earlier, the team from St. Petersburg said goodbye to another tournament, the Winline Russian Cup.

However, while the white-blues did this in the derby with Lokomotiv (1:2), Zenit suffered a sensational defeat in a penalty shootout with another Moscow club, Chertanovo. The blue-white-blues were knocked out of this tournament so early, at the quarter-final stage, in 2020, when they lost to the eventual winner, Moscow's Lokomotiv. Since then, the St. Petersburg team has consistently reached the final of the Winline Russian Cup. Therefore, one could only guess how motivated the Zenit players would be after such a slap in the face.

Indeed, both the final score and the course of the game at the Smena stadium last Sunday give every right to state that our team fell under the hot hand of the angry St. Petersburg footballers.

This is not the first time we have to talk about Dynamo's personnel losses: due to an injury sustained in the previous game with Lokomotiv, the white-blues' main central defender Helena Bozic was unable to take part in the match with Zenit. Therefore, Sergey Lavrentyev's team came out to play one of the championship leaders with a pair of central defenders that Dynamo had not played with this season: Milena Nikitina - Jose-Diana Pamen Tchato.

Taking all these circumstances into account, Zenit's activity from the very first minutes of the match was not at all surprising. The hosts were clearly counting on a quick goal - and they quickly achieved this. In the 14th minute, Gabriela Grzywinska was left all alone in our penalty area and, without much resistance from the Dynamo defense, sent the ball into Diana Ponomareva's goal after a pass from the left flank. As the further course of the game showed, Dynamo's defensive line repeatedly provided good opportunities for Zenit footballers, which they willingly took advantage of.

As for the Dynamo players' attacking play, they looked for their opportunities primarily in set pieces. And they even took advantage of one of them in the 27th minute, when Kristina Komissarova served a corner kick so intricately that Zenit goalkeeper Yulia Grichenko, in some confusion, sent the ball into her own goal. Incidentally, this goal was the first for Dynamo in matches with Zenit, the fifth in a row. Alas, the joy of the first goal scored was short-lived.

The hosts needed literally three minutes to not only take the lead for the second time in the match, but also to increase their advantage to two goals: first, Zenit captain Ksenia Tsybutovich in the 32nd minute, and then Kiki in the 35th took advantage of the mistakes of the Dynamo defense and scored their goals. The start of the second half was marked by another goal conceded by Dynamo: a lack of coordination between Ponomareva and Pamen Tchato led to Kiki scoring a double and bringing the score to 1:4.

Obviously, the game was over and even a series of substitutions in the Dynamo lineup could change little. And then Zenit scored its fifth goal – this time Gabriela Grzywinska scored a double with a beautiful long-range strike. Dynamo footballers were able to score one goal at the end of the match, but again only after a gross error by Grichenko – this time Kaylan Williams took advantage of it. But it was, of course, unrealistic to change the final result globally.

The meeting in St. Petersburg brought the white-blues long-awaited goals against Zenit, but the final score (2:5) complicated Dynamo's fight for third place, which the white-blues are stubbornly waging with Spartak and Lokomotiv, our team's next opponent in the next round of the Super League.

About the opponent

On Saturday, the white-blues will meet with the Lokomotiv Women's Football Club, a representative of the so-called "big three" of Russian women's football, which also includes CSKA and Zenit. The team has existed in its current form since 2018, before which the railwaywomen took part in the USSR and Russian championships in the late 80s and early 90s of the last century.

In its first season, the revived Lokomotiv took only 6th place among 8 participants, but starting from the 2019 season and for five years now, the team has consistently won trophies or reached the championship medals. The red-greens had their most successful season in 2021, when the charges of Elena Fomina, who is still heading the railwaywomen, made a "golden hat-trick": they won the Super League championship, the Cup and the Super Cup of Russia.

In just 6 years of its existence, the Lokomotiv Women's Football Club has collected all possible awards in Russian football: gold (2021), silver (2019, 2020) and bronze (2022, 2023) medals of the Super League, two Cups (2020, 2021) and two Super Cups (2021, 2022) of Russia, and took part in the UEFA Women's Champions League (2021/22).

Last season, the railwaywomen won bronze medals in the Super League again, for the second time in a row, and, as in the previous off-season, a whole group of players – the team’s leaders – left Lokomotiv: Anna Kozhnikova, Natalia Morozova, Alina Myagkova, Victoria Nosenko, Tatyana Morina, Maria Galay, Elina Samoilova, Irina Podshibyakina. The club’s main star – the railwaywomen’s top scorer Nelli Korovkina – also finished her career at Lokomotiv. After a break due to the birth of her child, she resumed her career, but this time at Zenit in St. Petersburg. However, the Railwaywomen were not left without star returns. After several years of playing in Europe (Chelsea, Paris), another star of Russian women’s football – midfielder Alsu Abdullina – returned to Cherkizovo. The return of the 23-year-old footballer turned out to be triumphant: Abdullin scored in her first match for the Railwaywomen (against Krasnodar in the previous round of the Super League, 2:0).

And in general, despite the losses in the squad, Elena Fomina's team looks solid this season: Lokomotiv has only two defeats (0:2 to CSKA and 0:3 to Dynamo in the first round), the goal difference is 24-8. By the way, just after the defeat to the white-blues in Novogorsk, Lokomotiv gave a 9-match unbeaten streak (8 wins, 1 draw, 34-2) in the championship and the Winline Cup of Russia.

It was in the cup tournament that Dynamo and Lokomotiv met for the last time two weeks ago. Only, unlike the upcoming meeting in Cherkizovo, the last one took place in Novogorsk. And it ended with an offensive defeat for the white-blues (1:2) and an exit from the tournament at the quarter-final stage. Last season, Dynamo finished its performance in the Winline Cup of Russia in the 1/8 finals after a defeat from another grandee of our football – Women's Football Club CSKA (1:4).

It should also be noted that Lokomotiv missed the previous round in the Super League, so the game with Dynamo will be the first for the railwaywomen in two weeks, just since the previous meeting with our team in Novogorsk.
